Chapter 1 – 4 Winston Smith, an employee of the Party, begins secretly writing a diary, an act punishable by death. He despises the Party and feels oppressed by its control. Winston recalls his past and desires to rebel against the Party’s oppressive rule.

Chapter 5 – 8 Winston meets Julia, and they start a forbidden love affair. He rents a room above Mr. Charrington’s shop to have private moments with Julia, believing they are safe from surveillance. They discuss their discontent with the Party.

Chapter 9 – 12 Winston and Julia are arrested by the Thought Police in the room above Mr. Charrington’s shop. They are taken to the Ministry of Love for interrogation and torture. O’Brien, once thought to be against the Party, is revealed as a loyal Party member and torturer.
