Full Book Summary: Chapter by Chapter
Chapter 1 – 4 Winston Smith, an employee of the Party, begins secretly writing a diary, an act punishable by death. He despises the Party and feels oppressed by its control. Winston recalls his past and desires to rebel against the Party’s oppressive rule.
Chapter 5 – 8 Winston meets Julia, and they start a forbidden love affair. He rents a room above Mr. Charrington’s shop to have private moments with Julia, believing they are safe from surveillance. They discuss their discontent with the Party.
Chapter 9 – 12 Winston and Julia are arrested by the Thought Police in the room above Mr. Charrington’s shop. They are taken to the Ministry of Love for interrogation and torture. O’Brien, once thought to be against the Party, is revealed as a loyal Party member and torturer.
Chapter 13 – 16 Winston undergoes brutal torture in Room 101, where individuals face their worst fears. He is broken mentally and physically, betraying Julia by pleading for her torment instead of his own. Winston succumbs, loving Big Brother.
Chapter 17 – 23 The Party’s control over truth becomes evident as Winston accepts the Party’s version of reality. He no longer resists, losing his individuality and freedom. The novel ends with Winston’s complete submission to the Party, realizing the powerlessness of his rebellion.
